CATALOGUE NOTE
Jan Frans van Bloemen was a Flemish landscape painter, mainly active in Rome. He started his career between 1681 and 1684 in Antwerp as a pupil, of Anton Gobau. In 1688 he travelled to Rome with his brother Pieter, where he joined the ‘Bentveughels’, the association of Dutch and Flemish artists in Rome. He got the nickname Orrizonte or Horizonti. Van Bloemen married Mattia Rosa Barosini in 1693 in Rome. He was successful and received commissions from prominent patrons such as the Queen of Spain, the Roman nobility and the Pope.
