Offered by Galerie William Diximus
An oval-shaped oil on canvas depicting Mr François Bégon at the age of 45. According to the archives, this portrait was painted in 1695.
The canvas is the original and the frame is period; it retains its beautiful gilding.
The portrait was painted in Hyacinthe Rigaud’s studio. We are aware of two other versions of this portrait. The location of the first commission remains unknown to date, and two further portraits were commissioned in the same year. Hyacinthe Rigaud and his brother Gaspard Rigaud, who in 1695 received 40 livres for ‘two copies of Monsieur Bégon’ (ms. 625, F-f°3v°).
The third portrait passed into Tajan’s collection and was cropped to a rectangular format; however, its quality is inferior.
François Bégon (1650–1725) was a French administrator of the late 17th century. In 1695, at the age of 45, he purchased the office of Grand Master of Waters and Forests of the Blaisois region.
This portrait, which was held for many years in a prestigious private collection, is in a remarkable state of preservation.
