Offered by Galerie William Diximus
Born in Wiedenbruck, Westphalia, Germany, in 1869;
Hugo Ungewitter was admitted to the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts in 1887; he became a sought-after painter for his large-scale depictions of German landscapes and received a commission to decorate Stotel Castle, followed by a commission from the imperial family for a painting depicting General Blücher’s crossing of the Rhine.
From the early 20th century, he traveled throughout Central Europe and South America; the African continent was his final major journey in the late 1920s. These unknown and wild lands attracted painters and explorers thanks to the studies of Alexander von Humboldt in the 19th century and the writings of Henry de Montherlant.
The painting titled “Horsemen Crossing the Ford” followed his very long stay in the Horn of Africa in Abyssinia, now known as Ethiopia.
In a majestic landscape bathed in pure light, a group of proud horsemen crosses a river ford.
