Japanese Lacquer Candy Box in the Shape of a Turtle, 19th Century

A rare 19th-century piece, this large lacquered wooden candy box takes the form of an imposing Minogame turtle, a symbol of longevity in Japanese tradition.
69 cm long, it captivates with its sculptural presence and the finesse of its work in natural brown and gold lacquer. The surface is entirely decorated in maki-e, using brown lacquer and gold powder to depict the turtle's scales. The eyes are made of glass.
The lid, topped with a patinated bronze snail—an ancient symbol of rebirth and prosperity—opens to reveal a painted scene inside depicting the hero Urashima Tar?, dressed in his court attire, holding a mysterious box and facing the underwater castle of Ry?g?-j?. The legend, popular since the 10th century, tells the story of a fisherman who, after saving a turtle, is taken underwater to Ry?g? Palace. He spends a few days there with Princess Otohime before attempting to return to land. Upon his departure, she gives him a box (tamatebako) that he must never open. Upon returning home, Urashima discovers that several centuries have passed. He then opens the box in despair and is immediately transformed into an old man or, according to some later versions, into a snail—the ultimate metaphor for the vanity of suspended time and irreversible transformation. This latter, rarer version is evoked here by the very presence of the snail on the turtle's back.
This rare piece, likely commissioned for a high-ranking household, is part of a tradition of luxurious pieces given on grand occasions.
