A rare lacquer incense box (kogo) in the shape of a yakatabune, the traditional Japanese pleasure boat, with a removable lid. The exterior features a refined kinji finish (a ground of very fine gold powder) and is decorated in hiramaki-e with stylized vegetal motifs evoking the thatched covering of the cabin roof. The interior of the box is finished in nashiji.
Period: Edo, 18th–19th century.
Dimensions: 4 x 12.5 x 5 cm.
