Offered by Mastromauro Japanese Art
A curious and rare Japanese box in the shape of a crab, crafted from woven bamboo and carved wood.
The animal is supported by its eight legs and two sturdy front claws, while its small eyes emerge from the top of the carapace. The lid opens to reveal a spacious interior compartment.
The body is finely crafted using a double-layered bamboo weave: the inner weave is wider and sturdier, while the outer layer is particularly tight and regular.
An attractive warm blond patina enhances the quality of the materials and the complexity of the construction.
Period: Taisho, first half of the 20th century.
Dimensions: 12 x 38 x 27 cm.
Condition: Excellent condition.
