Allegory of poetry - French Empire clock

This elegant Empire clock in gilt bronze is a refined example of early 19th-century decorative art. The composition is dominated by a finely sculpted winged Cupid, depicted in a relaxed, contemplative pose, gently leaning against the case. The anatomy is classically balanced, enhanced by a subtle interplay of matte and burnished gilding that highlights the sculptural quality.

The rectangular case is richly adorned with finely chased ornamentation, including a central relief featuring a winged figure and floral motifs, characteristic of the Empire style. At the top, a small stack of books adds a symbolic reference to knowledge, poetry, and intellect, perfectly complementing the allegorical theme.

The white enamel dial with Roman numerals provides a clear and harmonious contrast to the warm tones of the gilt bronze. It is signed « Emile Rouma, Liège ».

The clock is in good working condition and retains its original Empire-period gilding, which greatly enhances its authenticity and desirability.

The name Emile Rouma is associated with a family of distinguished clockmakers. Emile Rouma (1775-1849), son of Gilles Rouma — clockmaker to the Prince-Bishop of Liège — continued this tradition during a time when precision and artistry were closely intertwined. He first worked in Rue sous la Tour and later at Place Saint-Lambert, the historic heart of Liège. His craftsmanship was recognized with a gold medal at the Exposition des produits de l’industrie nationale in 1820 for a marine timepiece, a testament to his exceptional technical skill.

A harmonious piece in which sculptural elegance, symbolism, and horology come together.
