THE ARTIST
Barend van der Meer was a Dutch Golden Age still life painter, born and active in Haarlem. Trained by his father Jan van der Meer I, he became a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke in 1681. Two years later, he married and moved to Amsterdam, where he worked until around 1690. A follower of Willem Kalf, van der Meer specialized in lush still life and vanitas compositions. His precise attention to texture, combined with refined compositional arrangements, mark him as one of the more poetic still life painters of the late 17th century. He was also the brother of landscape painter Jan Vermeer van Haarlem II. Barend’s influence extended to younger painters such as Juriaan van Streek.
THE ARTWORK
This elegant still life, dated 1693, displays Barend van der Meer’s sophisticated mastery of texture and composition. Arranged on a stone ledge are bunches of white and blue grapes, ripened peaches in a porcelain dish, bright red currants, and woodland strawberries, all interwoven with autumnal vine leaves. A woven basket tips gently to the side, spilling its contents into the scene, while a second basket stands upright to the right. At the far left, a decorated roemer filled with dark wine balances the composition and adds a glinting contrast to the velvety surface of the fruit. A butterfly lingers at the base of the table, adding a delicate note of ephemerality to the stillness.
The work blends decorative opulence with natural simplicity, offering a vivid sensory experience that invites the viewer to pause. While not explicitly vanitas in tone, the motif of the butterfly and the subtle decay of leaves suggest a quiet meditation on transience. The clarity of form, luminous colors, and silvery light evoke the refined still life tradition of Willem Kalf, whom van der Meer admired and emulated.
