This elegant early seventeenth-century portrait depicts Christina of Lorraine (1565–1637), Grand Duchess of Tuscany and granddaughter of Catherine de' Medici. The sitter is presented in an exquisite court dress lavishly embellished with rows of lustrous pearls, intricate gold thread embroidery and delicate lacework, reflecting the wealth, sophistication and prestige of the Medici court.
