Joseph Delattre dedicated this painting “To my friend Billard”, the owner of the Café du Passage. The painter regularly visited the establishment to paint the changing atmospheric conditions of the Seine from the landing stage at Petit-Couronne, as seen here, with mist at daybreak.
The name of this café, which was both an inn and a guinguette where eel stew was served, came from a ferryman who would take passengers across the Seine for five sous.
