Born in Rouen on 19 November 1881, Eugène Tirvert belonged to a generation of artists determined to break away from the local artistic conservatism. In 1907, he joined the group known as the XXX, whose first exhibition, held at the Legrip gallery, marked a key moment in the development of modern painting in Rouen.
Tirvert maintained close ties with his fellow artists and friends, notably Maurice Louvrier, Robert Antoine Pinchon and Pierre Dumont, with whom he shared bold experiments in the use of colour.
