An antique six-panel Japanese Kano school screen painted on a gold leaf ground with gold sand, depicting an elegant natural landscape animated by cranes, pine trees, and seasonal flowers.
The composition unfolds through broad golden clouds that rhythmically articulate the space, while a majestic pine extends diagonally across the panels.
On the right, a pair of cranes with finely delineated plumage is depicted beside a grove of bamboo. A further group of cranes appears among the branches of the pine.
On the left, red and white peonies bloom beside the gnarled trunk of the tree, while at the centre a stream flows through the landscape among irises and rocks. Upon these rocks are depicted two minogame turtles, traditional symbols of longevity and prosperity, associated in Japanese iconography with wishes for eternal life and good fortune.
Burgundy lacquer frame.
Period: Edo, second half of the 18th century.
Dimensions: 166 × 378 cm.
Condition: The screen is in good condition. Minor signs of wear, stains, and some cracks across the surface. Restorations consistent with its age. Minor wear to the lacquered frame.
