La résurrection, Simon de VOS ( 1603-1676 )

Painting on copper, signed and dated 1645 in the lower left corner
The Resurrection is one of the foundational themes of the Christian faith; while humanity is condemned to the brevity of its existence, Jesus’s act of passing from death to life opens up a horizon of hope for humankind.
This resurrection offers a new perspective on the scale of time by eliminating the fatal end of existence after death; it brings a vision of renewal to humanity.
In Simon de Vos’s painting, Jesus rises from the dead; he appears before his faithful with simplicity and humility, surrounded only by a multitude of angels celebrating his return.
Mary, kneeling with her hand on her heart as a sign of maternal affection, is supported by Saint John the Baptist; before them, Joseph, the ever-present protector, finally steps out of the shadows. Their expressions show no surprise, unlike those of all the other disciples present in the scene.
The work was painted in 1645 and was certainly part of a commission; we know of a painting held at the Lille Museum, also signed and dated 1645, depicting the martyrdom of Saint Philip, painted in the same style, and the format is identical.
Simon de Vos is the perfect example of an Antwerp painter from the early 17th century, a city whose reputation at the time extended far beyond its borders.
From the age of 12, Simon de Vos studied drawing and painting with Cornelis de Vos; at 17, he was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke and left to perfect his art in Italy.
His painting is characteristic of early 17th-century Flemish classicism; however, he formed a relationship with Peter Paul Rubens, worked on pieces in his studio, and collaborated with Rubens and Jordaens on the decorations for the entrance of the Spanish governor Ferdinand in 1628.
His work was then influenced by P.P. Rubens; the expression of emotions became more intense, and his works grew brighter and more colorful.
His works are housed in museums in:
Antwerp, Amsterdam, Berlin, London, the Louvre in Paris,
the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Lille, Nantes, Rouen……
Dimensions with frame: 104.5 cm x 88 cm
Dimensions without frame: 87.5 cm x 70 cm
