Garden seat in "Blanc de Chine" porcelain. Dehua kiln. Kangxi period, early 18th century.
The seat is drum-shaped, with white porcelain pellets imitating drum nails glued to the upper and lower rims with slip. Some of these nails came loose during firing. The seat was made in three parts, wheel-mounted and assembled like slip nails. Firing such technically complex porcelain with its cut-out decorations, its mass, and its wide, flat surface is difficult. Minor accidents are inevitable; some of these nails came loose during firing. The porcelain is covered with a thick, creamy, slightly yellowish glaze. Aside from the missing nail heads, the object is in good condition, with no cracks or repairs. This seat, having been a functional object, has seen a lot of use, as evidenced by the significant wear and tear of use under a magnifying glass. It's a miracle that it survived in such good condition. Modern copies of this model exist. The seat is on display at the conservatory for you to try.
