A secretary desk with marquetry depicting flowers and precious objects, made of rosewood, amaranth, sycamore, palisander, boxwood inlays, and various stained woods.
Rectangular in shape with beveled front legs, it opens at the front with two doors adorned with lidded vases; above which is a richly inlaid drop-down panel depicting a table displaying objects from the liberal arts and the fine arts on a checkerboard-patterned floor, the whole crowned by a wide garland of flowers. An upper drawer is embellished with a frieze; the beveled sides simulate fluted pilasters, and the sides are inlaid with branches and flowers arranged across three panels.
The marquetry panels are set within frames featuring Greek-style decorations in the corners. The drop-down panel reveals six drawers and four compartments and is lined with beautiful red leather embossed with small iron motifs. Fittings of chiseled and gilded neoclassical bronze. Top of veined gray marble.
In very fine condition.
