Large, flat-topped center desk from the Louis XVI period, circa 1785–1790.
Large Louis XVI late-century desk in carved and varnished blackened pearwood, rectangular in shape, opening on one side with two juxtaposed drawers, centered by an overhanging cul-de-lampe, adorned with an elegant drapery supported by solid rings. The sharp-edged linear belt features brass quarter-rounds on all sides. It is joined to the base by connecting dowels adorned with sculpted plant motifs. It rests on a base with four square-section legs. Each of these is adorned with filleted flutes and terminates in carved acanthus flower hooves resting on a small flattened bronze ball-shaped cap, while the top is punctuated by a trilogy of discs, crowned by a plain convex ring. The whole set is topped by a large tray with emboiture, sheathed in gilded morocco embossed with grecques and rais de ruban. Dimensions: height 74.3cm, from base of belt to floor 63.3cm - width 85.3cm - length 158.4cm This imposing flat desk was used by aristocrats, notables, doctors, ministers and other businessmen in the 18th century.
