A period chest of drawers from the transition between the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles, featuring marquetry on a background of rosewood and “tobacco” wood. It opens with three rows of drawers and features a slight central projection. The top row consists of three small drawers inlaid with a light-wood interlaced frieze on a tobacco-colored background and framed by green-stained sycamore wood. A crossbar adorned with a gilt-bronze ingot mold separates the top row from the other two. The two lower rows have no crossbar and each consists of a large drawer, all inlaid with flowers and foliage in vases and kitchen utensils typical of Charles TOPINO’s work. The three front panels are framed by a double Greek-style frieze in green-stained sycamore. The sides are each inlaid with a superb bouquet of flowers in a vase. The chest of drawers is topped with Sarrancolin marble from the Pyrenees. Beautiful ornamentation of chiseled and gilded bronze. Attributed to Charles TOPINO, a Parisian cabinetmaker who became a Master in 1773.
