The foreground features a pond extending to the lower edge of the painting, its gentle waves dotted with waterfowl. On the shore, repoussoir trees and a patch of reeds frame the scene, while a simple bench—leading into the picture space—supports two leaning figures. In the middle ground, alternating clusters of bushes divide the composition horizontally, with horse-drawn carriages conveying travellers toward an as-yet unidentified country estate in the background.

Vertical formats occupy a special place in van Ruysdael’s oeuvre. Few such works are known, yet they typically exhibit a distinctive compositional approach: powerful, intricately rendered groups of trees guide the viewer’s eye into the landscape, linking it via the middle ground to grand architectures veiled in luminous haze. For instance, the town of Beverwijk appears softly blurred in the background of a painting dated 1646. Later, middle and background elements seem to have been depicted with similarly sharp contours, as seen in a 1663-dated work with noticeably crisper details (Christie’s, 9 July 2003, lot 47). Our painting aligns with the earlier type, suggesting a dating around 1650. It is unlikely to predate this, as works from the 1630s tend toward brownish tones.

Ruisdael is regarded as one of the greatest masters of river landscapes, and his works significantly shaped the development of Dutch landscape painting. His canvases often depict vast, atmospheric landscapes with rivers, windmills, and a masterful interplay of light and cloud. He was an important precursor to his nephew Jacob van Ruisdael and his son Jacob Salomonsz. van Ruysdael. His brother was Isaac van Ruysdael.
