PORTRAIT GUSTAV STEIN, 1968
After the Second World War, the artist was an important representative of abstract art. In 1933, he had his first solo exhibition at the Kölnischer Kunstverein in Cologne. In 1945, he founded the "Rheinische Künstlergemeinschaft Köln" (Rhenish Artists' Association of Cologne). From 1952 to 1955, he also served as chairman of the "Neue Rheinische Sezession" (New Rhenish Secession). What is special about his painting is his independent position within German Informel of the 1950s and 1960s. He painted pictures in which he applied thick layers of paint with palette knives and brushes, partly in a relief-like manner.
