Serpentine marquetry bedside table from the Transition period, with two doors, a side drawer and a red griotte marble top.
The striped and open-cube marquetry work in mahogany, plumwood and rosewood, together with the heart-shaped openings on the sides, recalls the work of Abraham-Nicolas Couleru (1717–1812), the first of a dynasty of renowned cabinetmakers celebrated for their marquetry furniture.
He spent almost his entire career in his native Montbéliard, yet nevertheless enjoyed great success among the Alsatian and Swiss bourgeoisie, as well as the German aristocracy.
The marquetry on all four sides of the piece is further evidence of the quality of the workmanship and of its maker.
