Empire-style regulator clock in flamed mahogany veneer with a monthly calendar, housed in a Restoration-era mahogany and mercury-gilt bronze portico case. The annular enamel dial is signed "ROBIN H. du ROI & de MADAME, AN 1820". The clock's movement is of high quality, displaying excellent technical classicism. It features beautiful gilt bronze capitals and a palmette frieze. The clockmaker Jean-Joseph Robin (1781-1858) was the son of the renowned clockmaker Robert Robin (1742-1799), a major figure in French clockmaking during the reign of Louis XVI. Jean-Joseph Robin achieved the same renown as his father and received a second-class silver medal at the 1819 exhibition of French industrial products. This regulator features a 31-day monthly calendar and uses a Graham escapement with a knife-edge suspension, an invention from the very end of the 18th century that allows for the suspension of a heavy balance wheel while eliminating friction. It is equipped with a Harrison grid-type balance wheel. The balance rod shortens or lengthens in response to cold or heat. The movement has been cleaned and restored to working order. Restoration report available.
