"The Supper at Simon the Pharisee's"
Flemish Venetian oil on copper
Early 17th century
29.5 x 37 cm
Framed 63 x 71 cm
This exquisite oil-on-copper painting illustrates the Gospel story of the Supper at the House of Simon the Pharisee with extraordinary narrative intensity.
The fulcrum of the composition is the devotional gesture of Mary Magdalene, captured in the act of anointing Christ's feet; the scene unfolds through a complex arrangement of the guests and the apostles, set in a convivial setting of great theatrical impact.
Formally, the painting is distinguished by a warm and vibrant color palette, where the juxtaposition of precious pigments such as carmine red, ochre, and green create a visual counterpoint of rare effectiveness.
The painting reveals a marked influence of the Venetian-Flemish style, evident in the meticulous rendering of details, the skillful use of chiaroscuro, and the presence of a section of the exterior in the upper right, where a Venetian building, bridge, and canal can be distinguished.
The copper, of considerable size, is in good condition.
