This colossal door frame is composed of three panels carved and sculpted from camphor wood, gilded with two shades of gold. On a honeycomb-patterned background, plants, fruits, and animals are carved in high relief. At the center of the pediment, a pair of phoenixes, symbols of the Empress, are visible. Two large vase shapes are carved into the side panels; it is likely that these two spaces were intended to hold vase silhouettes, either in transparent woven silk, painted glass, or porcelain. Importantly, halfway up each panel are pierced coins supported by bats. The coin on the left panel bears Manchu characters, and the one on the right panel bears Chinese characters. The presence of both Chinese and Manchu characters on the same object is found in 18th-century imperial artifacts. The four Chinese characters appear to mean "good omen, longevity, happiness under the star (sky)." The two Manchu characters, which can be translated as "Boo Kiyan," are found on imperial coins from the Qianlong period. These two marks, which the sculptor reproduced on the door frame, therefore represent a talisman, reversible on both sides, with a formula known in the 18th century.
The exceptional quality of the carvings, the remarkable dimensions, the presence of the Manchu characters, and the use of camphor wood suggest that this piece was made for one of the rooms of the imperial palace. The presence of Fenghuang (phoenix) would point to one of the rooms reserved for the empress. Camphor wood is resistant to insects and mold, which is why it was used for sculptures in the imperial palace and for major temples. Note the dimensions: Height: 373 cm, Width: 362 cm. There are a few missing honeycomb panels, but all the raised motifs are complete. The two side panels have been slightly shortened by a few centimeters. This is an absolutely exceptional door frame, worthy of the finest museums. A photo montage with silhouettes helps to visualize the dimensions.
