Kui Xing is in Chinese mythology, the god of exams, literature and patron saint of students. He is depicted as an ugly demonlike creature, standing with one foot on the head of a dragonfish (Ao) while holding a brush in his hand to write down the names of the students who have passed the exam. According to the myth his character is based on the story of a brilliant student who had passed all official exams but was not allowed to become a civil servant because of his looks. Desperate, the young man jumped in the river, from where a dragonfish carried him to heaven.
