It chronicles the life of Prince Genji, a man of great beauty who was both a poet and a charmer.
Through her incisive and critical eye, Murasaki Shikibu describes—with great precision—over a decade of life at the imperial court, covering themes such as seduction, cuckolded husbands, and spurned courtesans.
The screen portrays Genji in various scenes amidst courtesans and other.notables as they watch dances or, presumably, listen to poetry.
