Japanese gold lacquer writing table (bundai) and writing box (suzuri-bako)

A very rare matching set—in perfect condition—comprising a writing table (*bundai*) and its matching writing box (*suzuri-bako*). The original storage boxes are also included.
The decoration is truly an invitation to travel. One can clearly make out a thatched cottage situated on a small island surrounded by pine trees, with moored boats; the writing box features a background of mountains amidst the pines.
The polychrome lacquer work—featuring gold dust (*nashiji*), flat areas, and relief elements—demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship while silver fittings enhance the composition, which is in perfect condition.
Late Edo (1603–1868) to early Meiji (1868–1912) period; 19th century.
