Late 18th century, Louis XVI style, probably Northern Italy
Curved front and curved sides
An elegant pair of giltwood consoles, likely made in Northern Italy in the late 18th century, in the refined Louis XVI style.
The consoles feature a curved front interrupted by curved sides, creating a perfectly balanced design. The rich, high-relief carving, executed with great finesse, is abundant and elegant across the entire structure.
The frieze is adorned with beaded borders, facing doves and tied ribbons on the sides, within a vine foliage design; while the center features a display of scrolling foliage springing from a central vase, from which graceful flowers emerge, opening onto symmetrical volutes and counter-volutes.
The frieze supports Aleppo breccia marble with a double-grooved corbel, by means of a heart-shaped frieze, and is underlined by a ribboned frieze resting on four tapered feet.
These feet are surmounted by fluted capitals and decorated with ascending bunches of grapes, a symbol of abundance. They terminate in foliage motifs, linked by a highly ornate and particularly striking stretcher. This piece is centered on a richly sculpted vase, adorned with bunches of grapes and foliage, forming a striking decorative focal point of great artistic quality, descending gracefully in a sweeping, scrolling design with foliate motifs.
A very fine, high-relief work from the late 18th century, probably from northern Italy, retaining its beautiful original gilding.
