Offered by Antichità San Felice
Pair of medieval capitals decorated with leaf motifs, Lombardy, 12th century.
The slender shape from which the lanceolate leaves emanate, surmounted by a thick corbel, is typical of Lombard capitals produced between the 11th and 12th centuries.
The white stone used is believed to be the so-called "Zandobbio marble," a crystalline dolomite used since Roman times for its prized aesthetic and physical qualities. Quarries are located near the city of Bergamo. Its milky color, reminiscent of white marble, was highly prized for decorative details in Romanesque churches, such as capitals, bases, and floors.
Of the two capitals, one has some missing parts. Signs of aging and original patina.
