Works of art, sculptures and furniture Haute Epoque
This twisted white marble column, decorated with a Verde di Prato inlay and four-lobed relief motifs, is a refined fragment of Italian architectural sculpture. It dates from the 14th century and most likely comes from a cloister or church portal in Tuscany, a region where Verde di Prato, a local rock, was historically quarried and used for many centuries in numerous monuments.
The creation of a spiral-shaped barrel decorated with spirals, framed by two parallel side bands, creates a subtle interplay of concave and convex surfaces that captures the light and makes the material vibrate, revealing the purity of the marble and the depth of the green. The four-lobed motifs punctuate the surface, adding a refined geometric dimension. The two-tone decorations, combining the white of the marble with the green of the Verde di Prato, are characteristic of the Tuscan Romanesque style, which can be found in many cities such as Pisa, Pistoia, Lucca, and Florence. This combination of colors and materials not only provided visual rhythm to sacred spaces, but also placed the column within an aesthetic and symbolic tradition deeply rooted in local religious architecture. The twist, by introducing an upward movement, symbolizes the elevation of the soul toward the divine.
Before the 13th century, architectural columns mainly served a structural and decorative purpose. Our column is part of an Italian Gothic tradition, in which artists adapted ancient heritage to new aesthetic and spiritual requirements, with ornamentation taking on a more pronounced symbolic and spiritual meaning. Comparable examples can be found in the cloister of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, where spiral shafts punctuate the space and accompany the sacred light, giving the stone a sense of movement. The twist, framed by the side fillets, guides the eye and organizes the surface, while the four-lobed motifs punctuate the spiral with elegance, creating a balance between dynamism and rigor.
Thus, this twisted column, with its delicate motifs, harmonious materials, and understated profile, embodies a rare balance between architecture, decoration, and religious symbolism. It bears witness to Italian sculptural art of the late Middle Ages and retains all the evocative power of an art form in which white marble and Verde di Prato, animated by light, become visible supports of faith and instruments of spiritual contemplation.
