This cup and saucer set features a deep bleu lapis glaze richly decorated with gold. The central cartouche presents a detailed harbor scene with animated figures, sails, barrels, and mast — a vivid narrative composition typical of late 18th-century genre painting.
Marked with the interlaced “LL” for Sèvres and the date letter “aa” for 1778, this piece was painted by Jean-Louis Morin, one of Sèvres’ most celebrated painters (active 1754–1787), known for his genre, military, and ornithological scenes. This work is characterized by lively figural storytelling.
The gilding mark “B” refers to Jean-Pierre Boulanger, gilder active at Vincennes and Sèvres from 1754 to 1785, recognized for his refined scrollwork and border ornamentation.
Note: the original porcelain handle has been replaced with a later bronze mount, consisting of a curved metal handle fixed between two gilded bands.
