Sèvres, Louis XVIII period, 1823
Mark: interlaced “LL”, fleur-de-lis in blue and “Sèvres” in gold, numbered gn 27 1er 23
Dimensions: height approx. 11 cm; saucer diameter approx. 15 cm
This “tasse litron” cylindrical coffee cup and its matching saucer were produced by the Sèvres manufactory in 1823, during the reign of Louis XVIII. The cup is decorated in camaïeu bistre with a romantic scene of two putti (amours), clearly inspired by the style of Jean-Honoré Fragonard or his followers, with soft composition and a delicate Rococo spirit.
Set against a rich deep red ground, the saucer is adorned with black palmettes and scrolling foliate rinceaux, contrasting strongly with the central gilt medallion and emphasizing the symmetry and balance of Neoclassical aesthetics. The rim of the cup is trimmed with a gilt floral band.
Its gilded dragon-form handle, with an elegant S-shaped curl, merges the dragon’s head with floral scrollwork—a fine example of ornamental synthesis between classical and exotic motifs.
Excellent condition.
