Sèvres, circa 1780
This elegant straight-sided cup and its matching saucer were produced by the Royal Sèvres Manufactory in soft-paste porcelain. The set features a bright yellow ground, richly decorated with entwined rose garlands, blue ribbons, and foliage forming a continuous floral band around the body and rim. The central medallion displays a finely painted bouquet of roses tied with a blue ribbon. The use of rose pink borders and gilded details enhances the layered color palette, exemplifying the exquisite craftsmanship of late 18th-century Sèvres porcelain.
The piece is signed by Buteux fils aîné, active from 1763 to 1801, a renowned painter of floral and ornamental motifs, who also worked as a gilder.
Provenance: Former collection of Ostave Du Sartel (1823–1894). Octave du Sartel became known for his work on Chinese porcelain, publishing the first monograph on the subject in French in 1881. He owned a very large collection of works of art, which was dispersed during two sales marking the second half of the 19th century. Du Sartel's collection was exhibited at the 1878 Paris World's Fair and received widespread attention. He also served as a member of the Sevres Porcelain Factory Improvement Committee and actively promoted the development of French porcelain craftsmanship.
