A Louis XV giltwood console, circa 1760

Louis XV period bracket in lime wood finely carved and gilded with burnished gold leaf and amati to accentuate the sculptures. Of curved form with strong overhangs on all sides, the belt is only curves and counter curves treated with clerestory. This one rests on two feet with double inverted curves with scrolls, joined by a strut. Both follow the same philosophy as the belt, everything is movement and curves leading to atypical scrolls in the lower part. We find all the beautiful ornaments as elegant as refined of this period strongly influenced by the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii around 1750-1760 which influenced the second part of the reign of Louis XV. The decoration, where peonies, roses and tulips overflow from a fine wicker basket, is associated with a vase covered with antique flames, all alongside garlands of laurel, roses and leafy clasps. The whole is topped by a marble shelf in Cipolin ribboned from Corte with wavy veins. Cipolin is a marble used since antiquity by the Greeks, then by the Romans without forgetting the Byzantine Empire. It is worth noting the great care taken in the linking elements of impeccable quality. Balance, nervousness, elegance and quality are the most appropriate terms for this console very representative of the so-called Transition period. Work of the country of Aix en Provence from the Louis XV period around 1750-1760 after the drawings of Pierre Contant d'Ivry.
Marble dimensions : height 84cm - width 114.5cm - depth 58cm. Our console from a private mansion in Marseille is in excellent condition, only some wrinkles of time visible on the photographs are to be reported.
Pierre CONTANT d'IVRY, named "Architect of the King", was a precursor of the new tendency that appeared in 1752, the "symmetrical rocaille" that lasted until 1760: we can notice on these consoles that the rocaille is tempered by a strict symmetry.
The cartouche of roses, peonies and daisies is typical of the productions of Pierre Contant d'Ivry, which announces the arrival of classicism.
