A Louis XV ormolu-mounted satinwood table stamped Pierre IV Migeon.

A Louis XV ormolu-mounted satinwood marquertry table stamped by Pierre IV MIGEON, Mid-18th Century.
Small satinwood ribbon marquetry table, Louis XV period, stamped by Pierre IV Migeon. Curved on all sides, our table opens with two superimposed drawers at the front and a compartmentalized side compartment for writing. A writing pull-out panel overlooks the front drawers so as to be aligned with them. The latter is covered with patinated morocco leather, decorated with a small iron-cut gold garland, itself set in veneer of the same wood. The whole rests on a base with four slender curved legs. The whole is topped with Belgian red marble set with a solid satin bowl that follows the movement of the belt. The Migeon stamp is stamped on the edge of the right side belt.

75.4cm high –34.1cm deep –43.6cm wide.

Pierre IV Migeon (1696-1758), maître circa 1721.
Migeon's stamp is stamped on the edge of the right belt.
Pierre IV Migeon (1696-1758), like so many of the great artisans of Paris, came from a family of craftsmen. He received his maîtrise by 1729 and worked in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine in Paris, the traditional quartier for cabinet-makers. The majority of his output is in the classic Louis XV style – case pieces with lavish rococo ormolu mounts and veneered in floral marquetry or distinctive geometric patterns. He was known for employing simple veneers in a manner which made use of the natural beauty and grain of the material and for pieces with undulating outlines. He achieved rapid success, and from early in his career he also acted as a retailer as well as a maker of furniture, sub-contracting work as a marchand-ébéniste to his confrères who perhaps lacked access to a private business. Pierre IV Migeon produced pieces for an illustrious noble clientele, which led to large commissions by the Court and Madame du Pompadour.
