18TH century, Italian Baroque Lacquered Wood Center Table

This fine coffee table was made in Turin, Italy, in the first half of the eighteenth century, in transition between the Louis XIV and Louis XV era as you can see stylistically.
The coffee table is made of carved and lacquered wood. The oval and quadrilobed tray top has a molded and golden frame. On a black lacquer background stands out a refined polychrome cineserie decoration, in shades of red, green, ocher, with a lake or marine landscape in which islands and oriental houses, bridges and vegetation characteristic of China are depicted. The decoration is enlivened by the presence of Chinese figures dressed in oriental fashion who walk and perform daily activities. In the sky birds and dragonflies contribute to give liveliness and movement to the scene.
The top rests on four legs that originate from volutes decorated with rocaille phytomorphic elements, carved, gilded and lacquered in black. The curved legs end with goat’s hoof feet richly decorated with leaf reliefs. They are joined together in the center by four spirals ending in a curl on which rests the figure of a sitting cinesino, lacquered in red and black and golden, intent on playing the flute.
This coffee table is suitable to be placed in the center of a room, in a living room, between sofas and armchairs, or near a wall or a corner of the room. It can be used to hold a lamp or a vase, but thanks to its great decorativeness it can be exposed as a separate element. Bright and impressive, it is suitable to be combined both with antique furniture and in modern contexts.
