An imposing Piedmontese (Italy) armoire in solid walnut, dating from the late 17th century and the Louis XIV period, distinguished by its strong architectural structure and refined decoration of raised mouldings.
The two-door front, retaining its original hardware, is divided into three tiers of panels framed by elaborate projecting mouldings, with stepped details and shaped corner joints creating a lively interplay of planes. In the central panels, the rectangular framework encloses a shaped outline, introducing a sense of movement into the otherwise rigorous geometric composition. Flanking the doors, broad uprights are decorated with elongated recessed panels with shaped ends, likewise arranged in three tiers. The same attention to detail extends to the sides, each divided into three framed panels, ensuring that the piece is equally attractive when viewed from an angle.
Of particular note is the boldly projecting cornice, enriched with a sequence of modillions carved with foliate motifs, which emphasise the architectural character of the piece. The richly detailed upper section is balanced by a moulded base resting on bracket feet.
The interior, lined in a light-coloured fabric in good condition, features a broad upper shelf and a vertical partition separating a full-height compartment from a section fitted with several shelves, an arrangement that can be modified if required. This configuration allows the piece to serve either as a wardrobe or as a spacious pantry cupboard, combining the appeal of antique furniture with the practical requirements of contemporary living.
The clean volumes and geometric mouldings give the armoire a remarkably modern appeal, making it equally suited to traditional settings and contemporary interiors, where it can provide a striking focal point. Its well-balanced proportions and dimensions seldom encountered on the market, together with its elaborate decorative details and the warm colour of the walnut, lend the piece an imposing presence while combining decorative appeal with practical functionality.
The structure can be fully dismantled, facilitating transport and installation, even in rooms with restricted access.
