Takes a very large place in the art of his time alongside the Le Nain brothers. Son of a master glass painter. Was placed at the age of 7 as a pupil of Jean Barthélemy. From the age of 14, traces of his genius can be found in Bordeaux castles. Wearing without success he became a soldier.

He left for Rome, Venice and then for a tour of the great cities of Italy. Then, without a protector and Calvinist, he returned to Paris around 1637 and finally enjoyed great success. In 1643 the guild of goldsmiths commissioned a votive painting from him to be offered to the chapter of Notre-Dame.

We find him in the Loure, notably The Martyrdom of St. Peter. When the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture was created, he was one of the twelve elders who constituted the company .

He was appointed in 1652 as the first painter by Christine of Sweden.
