A Louis XV console circa 1755

Louis XV period wall console of the period called "Transition" carved wood, lacquered and partially gilded with burnished gold leaf and amati. Curved, eventful curvy and curvy sinuous, the belt is profusely openwork on all three sides. It rests on two twin inverted double-curved legs, joined by a spacer also openwork. Belt and spacer are centered with a bouquet of flowers and flowers with twining foliage emerging for one of a braided wicker basket and interlacing for the other. The ridge of both feet are similarly decorated, emerging from twisted and grooved ribbons enhanced with foliage rising up from the base wraps. Belt, legs and crosses are united with garlands of overflowing flowers and an opulent decor of leaves and foliage; the whole being topped with a sheet of red marble from Flanders edged with a dice. The contrasting game between the red marble, the clear lacquer, the glittering gilding as well as the breakthroughs, accentuates the visual, while giving an effect of depth and generous sweetness to the work of sculpture of this console so decorative. It should be noted the great care given to the connecting elements of an irreproachable quality. The red marble of Flanders greatly contributed to the beautification of the royal houses, almost all the important building sites appealed to its dark red colored harmony. It was also one of the marbles that contributed in part to the beauty of Versailles, including the elaboration of the sumptuous columns of the large vestibule of the large wing or the living room adjoining the great chapel of the royal castle. Balance, nervousness, elegance and quality are the most appropriate terms for this very representative console of the transition period. We find all the beautiful and refined ornaments of this period strongly influenced by the excavations of Herculaneum and Pompeii around 1750-1760 that influenced the second half of the reign of Louis XV.
