Lambert Joseph Mathieu (1804-1861) is the brother of the composer Emile Mathieu. A friend of Wiertz, he has produced historical and religious compositions, genre paintings, figures and portraits. His style is sometimes reminiscent of Rubens. In 1834 he was appointed director of the Louvain Academy. A great admirer of Raphael, he makes various copies of his works. Works in the Museums of Brussels, Mons, Verviers and Leuven.
