Raphaël and the Fornarina - Joseph Mathieu Lambert (1804-1861)

Large oil on canvas depicting Raphael drawing his muse la Fornarina.
The painting is signed and dated lower left "L.t Mathieu 1846"
On the cartouche it is annotated: Mathieu Lambert School of Louvain 1846
It is adorned with its original carved and gilded wood frame.

Lambert Joseph Mathieu (1804-1861) is the brother of the composer Emile Mathieu. A friend of Wiertz, he has produced historical and religious compositions, genre paintings, figures and portraits. His style is sometimes reminiscent of Rubens. In 1834 he was appointed director of the Louvain Academy. A great admirer of Raphael, he makes various copies of his works. Works in the Museums of Brussels, Mons, Verviers and Leuven.
