The composition of this seascape oil painting is masterfully built along a highly effective diagonal structure. The principal vessel, featuring a heavily inclined mast, dominates the center-left. In the distance, two additional sails (one rust-orange, the other subtly hinted at on the horizon) create convincing depth and structure the scene through a clever interplay of scale developed diagonally across the plane. A tricolor flag with horizontal bands, likely Dutch, flutters from the main mast.
The painterly palette relies on a refined, restrained color harmony: vibrant emerald and bottle greens define the turbulent sea, cool blue-grays and off-whites shape the sky, while deep warm browns and burnt reds lend structure to the sail and hull. The sky, filled with soft, scattered cumulus clouds, diffuses an unstable light typical of northern coastal weather. The overall surface retains a rich, luminous quality that enhances its historic appeal.
The pictorial treatment shows exceptional technique and artistic intelligence. In the sky, the paint layer is subtle and glazes are applied smoothly. Conversely, the sea is rendered with a thick, sculptural impasto, using broad directional brushstrokes that capture the surging motion of the waves. White crests and frothing foam are built up with dense, raised touches, achieved in places with a palette knife or dry brush application. The hull and sails feature a denser, textured finish that evokes worn canvas and the natural patina of weathered wood. Fine, rapid lines outline the rigging, while the crashing spray around the bow represents the focal point of dynamic expression.

He also studied privately under Andreas Dirks, sharing a deep fascination for marine themes. Notable among his contemporaries was the artist Albert Engstfeld.
