The Abduction of Psyche - Henri Godet (1863–1937) , The Abduction of Psyche, after Bouguereau

Henri Godet (1863–1937), after William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825–1905)
Le Ravissement de Psyché – The Abduction of Psyche
France, circa 1896
Patinated bronze
H. 79 × W. 33 × D. 26 cm
An important and highly romantic patinated bronze group by the French sculptor Henri Godet, after William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s celebrated composition The Abduction of Psyche.
The sculpture depicts Cupid carrying his beloved Psyche towards the heavens in a tender embrace. The intertwined figures, magnificent outstretched wings and sweeping drapery create a remarkable impression of upward movement and weightlessness.
Godet translates Bouguereau’s pictorial composition into three dimensions with considerable virtuosity. The delicate modelling of the figures, expressive faces, finely detailed wings and dynamic treatment of the drapery demonstrate the refinement of the sculptor’s work.
The base is inscribed:
“Wm BOUGUEREAU. Pt”
“H. GODET. Sct”
“Salon des Beaux-Arts 1896”
The model is historically documented: Henri Godet exhibited Le Ravissement de Psyché, after the painting by M. William Bouguereau; bronze group at the Paris Salon of 1896, under catalogue number 3488.
An impressive and deeply romantic example of late 19th-century French sculpture, combining classical mythology, sensuality and the artistic ideals of the Belle Époque.
