The Abduction of Orithyia by Boreas - Meissen

*The Abduction of Orithyia by Boreas* is a porcelain sculpture from the Meissen manufactory dating from the reign of Louis XV. The work rests on a gilded bronze Rococo-style base, bearing the ‘C’ crowned mark. This hallmark allows the piece to be dated to between 1745 and 1749. The sculpture measures 26.5 cm in height.

The scene is drawn from Greek mythology. Boreas, god of the north wind and the personification of winter, abducts the Athenian princess Orithyia, renowned for her beauty. Their union evokes the encounter between the indomitable force of the wind and the mortal beauty of the earth.
