In 1895, Albert Lebourg made his first journey to Holland. He initially chose Rotterdam, but the activity around his easel, particularly the presence of numerous children, made it difficult for him to concentrate.
Like Eugène Boudin and Claude Monet, he eventually chose to leave the city and paint the windmills along the canals in the surrounding countryside, where the quieter setting provided more favourable conditions for his work.
In this painting (photo of the work), Lebourg offers a particularly Impressionistic vision of the Dutch landscape. His generous handling of paint captures the subtle variations of light across the water and the banks. Two walkers, contemplating the landscape, seem to share with the artist this moment of tranquillity and mystery.
Original canvas and stretcher. Label on the reverse bearing the title of the work and the name of the collector, Pierron.
