An independent and determined spirit, Dumont rejected academic painting and embraced the emerging currents of modern art. In 1907, he founded the Groupe des XXX with his friends, a true laboratory for artistic modernity in Rouen, which evolved in 1909 into the Société Normande de Peinture Moderne. He brought together numerous avant-garde artists within the group.
Based at the Bateau-Lavoir in Montmartre, he continued this dynamic by founding, in 1912, together with Albert Gleizes, Jean Metzinger and the Duchamp brothers, the Section d’Or group, which would go on to achieve international recognition.
