Praised by critics, Narcisse Guilbert took part in numerous exhibitions alongside the highly creative Pierre Dumont, Maurice Louvrier and Robert Antoine Pinchon. In 1911, the collector François Depeaux acquired Quai de Croisset, en automne. Mobilised during the First World War, Guilbert returned to painting afterwards and took part in an exhibition devoted to marine painters, where he presented 17 works alongside Boudin, Signac and Delattre. In 1919, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Rouennais and held his first exhibition in Paris, at the Galerie Marbeuf.
Initially close to Joseph Delattre’s manner of painting, Narcisse Guilbert quickly developed his own style, broadening his brushwork. His palette, ranging from vivid colours to delicate bluish harmonies, became lighter, giving rise to luminous works. Strong contrasts emphasise the relief of the landscape, while softened angles and rounded lines lend his paintings a sense of serenity.
