In 1889, Joseph Delattre travelled to Gournay-en-Bray, where he painted several works in vivid colours. More inclined to work at dawn or at sunset, the artist here presents us with a particularly colourful painting, executed during the warm hours of the day.
In his correspondence with fellow painters, Delattre often complained that he was not a great colourist, yet his body of work demonstrates quite the opposite. The richness and vibrancy of his palette reveal his true talent for colour.
Camille Pissarro regarded him as one of the greatest painters of Rouen.
