Portrait of a Young Woman
Auguste Charpentier (Paris 1813–1880)
Signed lower left
Oil on canvas
First half of the 19th century
Canvas 50 x 62 cm
Frame 80 x 92 cm
The painting is in excellent condition and comes with its original, substantial period frame.
The portrait depicts a beautiful young woman, shown frontally and illuminated by a soft, lateral light.
The artist highlights the right side of her delicate facial features, while leaving the opposite side in partial shadow.
This effect, accentuated by the dark background, lends the image a captivating air of mystery.
The painting is the work of Auguste Charpentier, a renowned 19th-century French portraitist, who signed the piece in the lower-left corner.
Auguste Charpentier—born Philippe Auguste Cazier-Charpentier on January 29, 1813, in Paris (formerly the 3rd arrondissement) and died on May 15, 1880, in Paris (10th arrondissement)—was a prominent 19th-century French painter, engraver, and draftsman.
He studied under Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and François Gérard at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1833.
He quickly established himself as a portraitist, painting many notable figures of the Second Empire, including George Sand, Narcisse Díaz de la Peña, Alexandre Dumas, and the actress Marie Delaporte.
Many of his paintings, particularly his portraits, are held in various French museums and significant private collections.
