The Virgin and Child
Tuscan School, 17th century\
Oil on canvas
Carved, lacquered and gilt frame\
Canvas: 61 × 76 cm\
Frame: 73 × 89 cm
The work depicts the Virgin with her Child.
Mother and Child exchange a glance: the Virgin's face is imbued with melancholy, while that of the infant Jesus is full of liveliness.
She supports him with infinite tenderness and draws aside the cloth to reveal him to the viewer.
The Child, completely nude, must turn to meet his mother's gaze; an unusual pose that gives the composition a very particular charm.
Beyond the arrangement of the figures, the canvas is distinguished by an excellent mastery of color, perfect harmonies, and the artist's great skill in rendering subtle tonal gradations.
The painting can be attributed to an inspired 17th-century Tuscan artist, who created a work with innovative characteristics for a devotional image, a genre often marked by repetitive compositions.
Indeed, the Child's face — with his curly blond hair and lively, wide-open eyes — as well as the Mother's features, find no equivalents in other paintings depicting the same subject.
The canvas is in very good condition and is presented in a superb antique carved, lacquered and gilt frame.
