“The Holy Family, Rest on the Flight into Egypt”

Oil on canvas\
Bolognese School, early 17th century\
Attributed to Simone Cantarini, known as “Il Pesarese”\
(Pesaro, 1612 – Verona, 1648)

Canvas: 112 × 74 cm\
Frame: 122 × 86 cm

Very good condition.

This superb large-format canvas depicts the Holy Family resting in a meadow at the edge of a forest during a stop on their flight into Egypt.

A very young Virgin Mary, with a gentle and affectionate gaze, presents her Child, who welcomes with open arms the flowers offered by two cherubs.

Joseph, seated beneath a tree, observes the scene with seriousness and gravity, aware of the hardships involved in their journey.

On the ground, a few modest personal belongings can be seen, taken along during their hurried departure from Nazareth.

The figures, positioned in the foreground and bathed in gentle shadow, stand out clearly against the luminous landscape stretching behind them, creating a remarkable sense of depth.

The composition is a variation of a celebrated work by Simone Cantarini, preserved at the Louvre Museum. It modifies the arrangement of the three main figures and introduces cherubs, thereby bringing greater liveliness to the scene.

The painting is distinguished by exceptional chromatic richness, characterized by vivid shades of red and blue, as well as remarkable color harmony, enhanced by powerful contrasts of light and shadow.

The colors have remained intact and perfectly vibrant thanks to the use of pigments of the highest quality — a luxury which, due to its considerable cost, was accessible only to the most prestigious workshops.

The attribution to the master Cantarini is also supported by the stylistic elegance of the work, which reflects the taste of the Bolognese Baroque School — that of Reni and the Carracci — assimilated during his stay in the capital of Emilia.

For comparison, we present two paintings by Cantarini displaying the same pictorial and compositional similarities as the work offered here.
