Pair Of Gilded Bronze Amphora Vases From The Empire Period, Circa 1810–1820

An elegant pair of gilt-bronze amphora vases from the Empire period, made in France in the early 19th century, circa 1810–1820. Of neoclassical form, each vase features a flared neck surmounted by a wide circular rim finely chased with godrons and foliage motifs. The body is flanked by two slender, gracefully curved handles, adorned with stylized plant motifs and palmettes, characteristic of the Empire decorative repertoire. The lower part of the body is particularly richly decorated, with a finely chiseled design of acanthus leaves and palmettes. The entire piece rests on a baluster foot with foliage decoration, set on a square base and a stepped plinth adorned with a vegetal frieze. The quality of the chiseling is highlighted by a beautiful balance between the matte-gilded and burnished surfaces, creating subtle contrasts and particularly emphasizing the relief of the ornamentation. The vases are composed of several elements assembled using the traditional bronze-casting techniques of the period. The bases retain their original wooden panels as well as old handwritten inscriptions. With their harmonious proportions, remarkable symmetry, and the delicacy of their neoclassical decoration, these vases are a fine example of French decorative arts from the Empire period.
